“How much are hair extensions?”

It's a completely reasonable question.

It's also a little like asking, “How much does it cost to renovate a kitchen?”

Are we changing the countertops...or are we moving walls?

Hair extension pricing can vary dramatically because two people asking for “extensions” may need completely different services.

One person may want a little fullness through the sides of her shoulder-length hair. Another may have a bob and want thick, 22-inch hair.

Those aren't the same project.

So rather than throwing out a number that may have nothing to do with your hair, let's explain what you're actually paying for.

What determines the cost of hair extensions?

The biggest factors are the type of extensions, amount of hair, length of hair, installation and color customization.

The amount of extension hair needed is especially important.

If you already have longer hair and simply want to fill in thin ends, you may need considerably less hair than someone making a dramatic length transformation.

Natural density matters too.

A client with very thick shoulder-length hair needs enough extension hair to make the transition from her natural hair into the extensions look intentional. Otherwise, you get that extension look we are desperately trying to avoid: short, thick natural hair sitting on top of long extension hair.

We want everything to disappear together.

Does extension length affect price?

Usually, yes.

Longer extension hair generally costs more, and dramatic transformations often require more hair overall to create the right density from top to bottom.

But we don't think everyone needs super-long extensions.

Sometimes adding a relatively small amount of hair at roughly your existing length creates a bigger visual transformation than adding eight inches.

If what bothers you is that your ends look thin, density may be the goal—not length.

Does the extension method change the cost?

It can.

Different extension methods use different hair, installation processes and maintenance schedules.

At BLOND Studio, we work with multiple methods, including K-tips, weft extensions and V-light extensions.

Instead of choosing a method solely because of its starting price, we recommend looking at the whole picture:

How much hair will you need? How often will you need maintenance? What does maintenance involve? How long is the hair expected to be worn? Does the method make sense for your lifestyle?

The cheapest initial option isn't necessarily the least expensive option long-term—and the most expensive method isn't automatically the best.

What else are you paying for?

This is the part people don't always think about.

A good extension service isn't simply purchasing hair and attaching it to someone's head.

There is planning.

We have to determine the appropriate method and placement. We select extension colors and often customize them to work with your natural hair. After installation, the extensions need to be cut and blended so your natural hair and extension hair read as one head of hair.

This is especially important with blondes and dimensional color.

A box of extension hair may come in a beautiful blonde shade, but your blonde probably contains multiple tones.

Getting that right is one of our favorite parts.

What does hair extension maintenance cost?

Your initial appointment isn't your only extension expense, so this is something you should understand before having extensions installed.

Maintenance depends heavily on the method.

Wefts need periodic maintenance as your natural hair grows.

K-tips have a different wear and replacement cycle.

You'll also want extension-safe home care and you'll need to treat the hair well if you want it to continue looking beautiful.

During a consultation, ask what your expected maintenance schedule will be—not just what today's appointment costs.

We would much rather have someone understand the commitment upfront than realize three months later that she signed up for something that doesn't fit her life.

Why can't a salon just quote me from a picture?

Sometimes we can give you a general idea, but an accurate extension plan usually requires more information.

We need to know what your natural hair looks and feels like.

Photos can hide density surprisingly well. They also don't tell us everything about your scalp, breakage, haircut or how much hair your natural density can comfortably support.

This is why we recommend an extension consultation before committing to a full transformation.

Are expensive extensions worth it?

We obviously work in the extension industry, so take this with the appropriate grain of salt—but good extensions can be one of those beauty services that changes how you feel about your appearance every single day.

You wake up with the hair.

You go to work with the hair.

It's in every photo.

You don't wash it off at night.

For someone who has spent years frustrated because her hair won't grow past a certain point or never feels full, that can be incredibly valuable.

But extensions are still a luxury service.

They should fit comfortably within your budget, including maintenance.

We never want someone stretching financially just to maintain her hair.

You don't need to arrive knowing extension terminology.
