How to Care for Hair Extensions: The BLOND Guide
You just left the salon with the hair of your dreams. Now let's keep it that way. ✨
High-quality hair extensions are an investment, and what you do at home makes a huge difference in how they look, feel and wear over time.
The good news? Taking care of extensions doesn't need to take over your life.
Whether you're wearing K-tip extensions or hand-tied extensions, here's everything we want our BLOND clients to know.
Washing Your Hair Extensions
You can absolutely wash your hair normally with extensions—you'll just want to be a little more intentional about how you do it.
A few rules we swear by:
Brush your hair thoroughly before getting into the shower.
Shampoo your scalp and roots rather than piling your hair on top of your head and scrubbing.
Use your fingertips to gently work shampoo around your extension attachments.
Let the shampoo run through your ends as you rinse.
Apply conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends.
Avoid putting heavy conditioner, masks or oils directly on your extension attachment points.
Rinse thoroughly.
And no aggressive towel-drying. Gently squeeze or blot out excess water instead of rubbing your hair back and forth like you're trying to start a fire. 😉
Drying Your Extensions: It Depends on Your Method
Not all extensions have the same drying rules.
If you're wearing Genius Wefts or K-tips, you don't have to blow-dry your extensions after every wash. Air-drying is totally fine—just make sure your hair is completely dry before going to bed. Sleeping with wet extensions can lead to unnecessary tangling and matting.
If you're wearing hand-tied wefts, your rows and attachment areas do need to be blow-dried after washing. Make sure the weft and the hair around your attachment points are fully dry rather than allowing the row to stay damp.
Not sure which type you're wearing or what your routine should look like? Ask your BLOND stylist—we'll make sure you know exactly how to care for your specific extensions. 🤍
How to Brush Hair Extensions
Extensions need brushing—but they also need the right kind of brushing.
Use an extension-friendly brush and start at your ends, gradually working your way upward.
With your free hand, you can support the hair near the attachment area while brushing to avoid unnecessary pulling.
And don't forget your roots!
With hand-tied extensions especially, you'll want to carefully brush and separate around your rows as instructed by your stylist. With K-tips, gently brushing and separating the individual bonds helps prevent neighboring pieces and naturally shed hair from tangling together.
A quick brush in the morning and before bed goes a long way.
Sleeping With Hair Extensions
Your extensions do not need their own silk pajamas. Although, honestly, we wouldn't judge.
Before bed:
Make sure your hair is dry.
Brush it thoroughly.
Put it into a loose braid or low ponytail.
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase if you have one.
The goal is simply to prevent your hair from rubbing, twisting and tangling all night.
Heat Styling Your Extensions
Curl them. Wave them. Blow them out. Live your life.
Just use heat protectant every time.
Extensions don't receive natural oils from your scalp the same way your own growing hair does, so protecting the lengths from unnecessary dryness and heat damage is especially important.
For K-tips, avoid placing a hot tool directly on the keratin bonds as the heat can melt the bonds.
Products Matter
Not every product in your shower needs to be thrown away the second you get extensions—but your routine may need a little editing.
We generally recommend:
A gentle, extension-friendly shampoo
A moisturizing conditioner
Leave-in conditioner/ detangler
Heat protectant
A lightweight oil or serum for the ends
An extension-safe brush
Keep conditioners, masks and oils primarily on your mid-lengths and ends, rather than coating your attachment points.
Not sure if something in your bathroom is extension-safe? Ask us. We'd much rather check the product than have you guess.
Swimming, Pools & Beach Days
We're in Florida. We're certainly not going to tell you that getting extensions means never going in the pool or ocean again.
But salt water, chlorine, minerals and lots of sun can be rough on both your natural hair and extensions.
Before swimming, secure your hair in a braid or another protective style and avoid letting it become a giant wet knot. If you wet your hair with fresh water or layer on some conditioner before going for a dip, even better.
We do not reccomend snorkeling or scuba diving in extensions as we have see major tangling from the pressure of the mask on extensions.
After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water as soon as you can. Wash and condition when appropriate, gently detangle and make sure your attachment areas dry completely.
If you're spending a lot of time in pools or the ocean, talk to your stylist about the best routine and products for your specific extensions.
Sunscreen + Blonde Extensions: Check Your Ingredients
Here's one you might not expect: some chemical sunscreen ingredients can discolor blonde extensions, leaving them with an orange, peachy or brassy tone. And unfortunately, that discoloration can be difficult to remove.
If you wear blonde extensions, we recommend checking the ingredient list on your sunscreen and avoiding products containing:
Avobenzone
Octocrylene
Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)
Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate)
Homosalate
This is especially important with body sunscreen, since your extensions can easily come into contact with sunscreen on your neck, shoulders, back and chest.
And no—we're definitely not telling you to skip SPF. ☀️ Instead, look for a sunscreen without these ingredients, keep your extensions pulled up and away from freshly applied sunscreen, and allow your sunscreen to fully absorb before letting your hair down.
Florida sunshine + blonde extensions = check that SPF label. Your hair will thank you.Working Out With Extensions
What NOT to Do With Hair Extensions
A few things we'd really prefer you didn't do:
Don't sleep with soaking-wet extensions.
Don't aggressively brush through tangles from the root downward.
Don't put heavy oils directly on attachment points.
Don't put hot tools directly on K-tip bonds.
Don't let wet hair sit tangled after swimming.
Don't pick at, pull on or try to remove your own extensions.
Don't ignore matting or an extension that suddenly feels uncomfortable.
Don't wait to reach out to us if you’re having discomfort or issues.
If something doesn't feel right, reach out.
K-Tip vs. Hand-Tied Extension Care
Most of your routine will be the same, but the attachment methods require slightly different attention.
K-Tip Extensions
Because K-tips are installed as individual bonds, keeping those bonds separated is important.
Be mindful of heavy oils and conditioners near the bonds, brush carefully around them and avoid applying direct heat to the keratin attachment.
As your natural hair grows, you'll have more space between your scalp and the bond. That's normal.
Hand-Tied Extensions
Your rows need a little love, too.
Make sure you're cleansing your scalp thoroughly around and between your rows, rinsing completely and drying the row/attachment area after washing if you aren’t wearing genius wefts.
Brush carefully around your rows without aggressively pulling on the weft or attachment points.
And most importantly: stay on schedule with your maintenance appointments.
How Long Will My Extensions Last?
There isn't one universal answer.
The type of extension, quality of hair, your natural hair, lifestyle, home care, heat styling, swimming habits and maintenance schedule can all affect how your extensions wear.
That's why we don't love giving every client the exact same blanket timeline.
Dependiing on the type of exentions they can last anywhere from 3 months to 1 year.
When Should You Contact Your Stylist?
Please reach out if you notice:
Significant matting or tangling near your attachments
Unusual pulling, pain or persistent tenderness
A row or attachment that feels loose or uncomfortable
Excessive shedding from your extensions
Unexpected discoloration
You're unsure whether a product is safe
Something just doesn't seem right
Don't wait until your next appointment and hope for the best. Most little extension issues are much easier to deal with when they're still little.
Great Extensions Start With the Right Method
The best extension routine actually starts before the extensions are installed.
At BLOND Studio, we don't believe everyone should automatically get the same method, amount of hair or maintenance plan.
Your natural density, lifestyle, goals, scalp, styling habits and desired result all matter.
That's why we specialize in customized extension transformations—including K-tip and hand-tied extensions in St. Petersburg, Florida—and help you choose the method that makes sense for your hair.
