Why Your Hair Extensions Look Great From the Back—but Not From the Front
We see this ALL the time with extensions.
From the back? Gorgeous. Long, thick, perfect.
Then you pull all of your hair forward and suddenly…something isn't quite working.
Maybe you can see where your natural hair ends. Maybe the front looks way thinner than the back. Or you have these short little pieces around your face that just aren't connecting to the rest of your hair.
This is usually a blending problem—and adding a ton more hair isn't necessarily the answer.
Your extensions need to look good from every angle
Most extension before-and-after photos are taken from the back. And I get it—that's where you get the big, dramatic transformation.
But that's not how you actually see your own hair all day.
You're looking at it from the front.
You pull it over your shoulders. You tuck it behind your ears. You wear a ponytail. You throw it up in a claw clip.
So when we're planning an extension install at BLOND, we're thinking about what your hair looks like from ALL of those angles.
Not just the money shot from the back. 😂
The front of your hair is usually different
A lot of us naturally have less hair around our temples and hairline.
Then add years of highlights, heat styling, hormonal changes, postpartum shedding, breakage, or just genetics, and those front pieces can be even finer or shorter than the rest of your hair.
This can become really noticeable when you add extensions.
Suddenly you have all this beautiful density and length through the back, but the front still looks like your old hair.
That's where a really customized extension install makes such a difference.
Sometimes you need hair in a different place—not MORE hair
This is probably one of the biggest things I wish more people understood about extensions.
More hair isn't always better.
You can keep adding rows to the back of someone's head, but that's not going to fix a thin area around her face.
Sometimes what makes the biggest difference is adding just a few individual K-tip extensions around the sides or near the face.
Because K-tips are individual, we can place them in areas where a hand-tied row can't—or shouldn't—go.
A handful of little pieces in the right place can sometimes make the entire install look more natural.
Your haircut matters too
This one gets overlooked a lot.
Extensions don't magically erase your existing haircut.
If you have a really blunt haircut, lots of short layers, broken pieces around the front, or a big difference between the length of your natural hair and your extensions, the blend takes more work.
That's why cutting and shaping the extensions after they're installed is SO important.
We're looking at where your natural hair ends, where the extension hair begins, how everything falls around your face, and whether there are any obvious lines that need to be softened.
Sometimes the difference between extensions that look like extensions and extensions that look like really amazing hair is the haircut at the end.
Color can give extensions away too
Even if the length blends perfectly, a color mismatch can make extensions obvious.
And we're not just talking about blonde vs. brunette.
Most people's hair has multiple tones running through it. You might have a brighter money piece, a darker root, dimension underneath, or several different shades of blonde throughout your hair.
Using one solid extension color on dimensional hair can sometimes create a disconnect.
We can use multiple extension shades and thoughtful placement to mimic what's already happening in your natural hair.
The goal isn't for the extension hair to be a close-enough match.
We want it to look like it belongs there.
A good extension install isn't one-size-fits-all
Two clients can both ask for 20-inch extensions and need completely different installs.
One might need two rows.
Another might need a row plus K-tips around the front.
Someone else may need more hair simply because her natural hair is thick and we need enough extension hair to blend with it.
That's why we don't decide what you're getting based on a package alone.
We look at YOUR hair first.
Where is it thick? Where is it fine? How short is it? How do you normally wear it? Where do you need length? Where do you need fullness?
Then we build the install around that.
The goal is for people to notice your hair—not your extensions
We're not trying to fit the most hair possible onto your head.
We're trying to create hair that makes sense on you.
Sometimes that means a big transformation. Sometimes it means filling in a few annoying little areas around your face that you've hated forever.
And sometimes those tiny details are what make the biggest difference.
