Why We Sometimes Add K-Tips to a Hand-Tied Extension Install

One thing I really love about extensions is that there doesn't have to be one method that works for everyone. And honestly, some of our best extension installs use more than one method.

One of my favorite combinations is hand-tied extensions with a few K-tips added around the front and sides.

Here's why we do it.

Sometimes a row just can't get where we need it to go

Hand-tied extensions are amazing for adding the majority of your length and fullness. For a lot of our clients, they're doing most of the work.

The problem is that a row can only come so far forward on your head.

If you naturally have finer hair around your temples or shorter pieces around your face (which SO many people do), you can end up with gorgeous, thick, long hair in the back but still feel a little sparse around the front.

That's where K-tips are so good.

Because K-tips are installed individually, we can put just a few exactly where we need them to fill in those areas and connect the front of your hair to the rest of your extensions.

It's not necessarily about adding MORE hair

This is something I talk about with clients all the time.

More hair doesn't automatically equal better extensions.

Sometimes you don't need another row or a ton more hair. You literally need 5 or 10 little pieces in the right spot.

That's what can take an install from looking good to looking like it's actually all your hair.

And that's always the goal.

The front matters just as much as the back

We see so many extension photos from the back because, obviously, that's where you get the big dramatic before and after.

But you're not walking around with everyone staring at the back of your head. 😂

You see your hair from the front. You pull it forward over your shoulders. You wear it up. You tuck it behind your ears.

So when we're doing an install, we're looking at how the whole thing works—not just whether we can give you 22 inches of beautiful hair down your back.

If your natural hair is shorter or thinner around your face, adding a few K-tips can make that transition into your longer extensions SO much softer.

Does everyone with hand-tied extensions need K-tips?

Nope.

Some people have plenty of natural hair around the front and their hand-tied extensions blend beautifully on their own.

For other people, adding a handful of K-tips makes a huge difference.

That's why we don't really believe in doing the exact same extension install on every client. Two people can come in wanting the same length and fullness and leave with completely different extension plans.

Your natural hair, density, haircut, lifestyle and even how you normally style your hair all play into what we recommend.

This is why we love offering multiple extension methods

Being able to work with both hand-tied and K-tip extensions gives us a lot more freedom.

We're not trying to make your hair work with the extension method.

We're trying to make the extension method work with your hair.

Sometimes that's two rows of hand-tied extensions. Sometimes it's K-tips. Sometimes it's a combination of both.

And sometimes it's literally a few perfectly placed pieces around your face that make the entire thing come together.
